Has anyone had thier ears syringed at Specsavers or Boots?

Hubby urgently needs his ears syringing and before Covid always got them done through the doctors every 6 months or so.

Was at the docs this morning who agreed they need doing but till today we were not aware that you cant get them done at the clinic anymore as its not something you can have done on the NHS since Sept 2020.

Been googling to find somewhere and there area lot of fancy clinic sites but theres also mention of Boots and Specsavers doing them. Just wondered if they are ok to use rather than a costly private clinic.

The other thing is that in the ads they mention ear syringing, ear wax removal and earwax suction as 3 different choices for blocked ears. Does anyone know what the difference is with the 3 treatments, is one better than the other?

I am going to ring round tomorrow but just wanted to see if anyone has used either Boots or Specsavers to have ears done and if they would recommend.

Mine were blocked quite badly in that I couldn't hear properly. I used the kit and done it myself  it worked very very well. Has your hubby tried that?

Syringing is the old way of doing things where they pump water in and push the wax out, while with microsuction they "vacuum" the ear wax out. Both are effective, there's less likelihood of permanent ear damage with microsuction as syringing is much more likely to damage the eardrum.

Microsuction is more expensive because it requires specialist equipment and more skill. I've had both over the years and wouldn't risk syringing any more. Your ears are precious, IMO you shouldn't skimp on looking after them.

I haven't used Boots or Specsavers though.

    What 'kit'?
Personally I agree with OldMusicGuy - ears and hearing is too precious to mess about with.

Just had mine done today at Specsavers by micro suction
    Cost about £58.00
Much better than water based technique
    One ear needs more treatment
    Second visit free

Use earol to soften wax first

Do not try to do it yourself
  • Tried Specsavers but it seems that due to narrow ear canals microsuction. isn't an option. With no personal transport and the nearest ear syringing person 20 odd miles and two busses away, no choice but to have ears syringed at home... £85..

Not generally available on NHS so you're lucky:

People suffering from a build-up of ear wax are not entitled to have their ears syringed on the NHS in England, a government minister has confirmed.

Edward Argar said it was no longer one of the core services GPs are obliged to provide.

In my area (Derbyshire) you have to pay for it.
