Old Barclaycard accounts

Hello.
In 1996, I took out two Barclaycard accounts; a Visa card with maximum balance £2,000 and a Mastercard with maximum balance £1,500. These accounts were settled c.2001.
Prior to the August 2019 deadline, I queried the potential of PPI in relation to the two accounts. In response, I was told that no records of any such accounts existed. This left me in a difficult position because I had got no trace of the account details (including 16-digit serial numbers). Unfortunately, I have got no record of my efforts to correspond with Barclaycard. This is probably because my attempts to apply for compensation were done via their online portal. Also, I suffered a lap-top theft which meant that any records (emails or Word documents that I had generated) would have been lost.
However, I do have written responses from Barclays / Barclaycard. These, at least, acknowledge that attempts were made on my part. More encouragingly, what I have since found is a 16-digit serial number on an old receipt (in a scrapbook following a trip to USA) that was used for a purchase in 1996.
So, the question as of today is what I can possibly do in order to prove the existence of these credit card accounts? I have some ideas but would very much appreciate responses in the first instance. Now that I have been able to prove the existence of a 16-digit serial number, I feel slightly more empowered but I do not want to rush in there without putting myself in the strongest position available.
Thank you in advance.

So, the question as of today is what I can possibly do in order to prove the existence of these credit card accounts? It isn't the existence of the account that matters. its the existence of PPI premiums that you need to have. A receipt showing a card number doesn't tell anyone if you had PPI or not.
Barclays won't hold statements from before 2001 on a closed account. So, there is no way for you to prove you had PPI unless you have the copy statements.
