Can you transfer smart energy data from one provider to another when you switch?

I realised my energy deal has come to an end, and since the price cap increase on energy has been announced, I want to grab a fixed deal before the prices go up.

I'm currently with Shell Energy and have been for the last 3 years - they've always been cheapest or thereabouts for me. However, this year their cheapest tariff is £11 a month more than the cheapest competitor E-ON.

One thing I love about being with Shell is I can look back on data from the past 2 years since I got the smart meter and easily compare/analyse my usage. If I switch and the history is wiped, I would miss it, but it's not worth £11 a month to hold on to it.

Does anyone know if the smart meter usage data gets transferred to a new provider? Or would it all be wiped and started from nothing since it's a new account?

Thanks!

    Can you download your data from Shell? I'm with EDF and they offer the option to save your data as a CSV file.

  • I do not believe that what you are suggesting will ever happen for data protection reasons.That said, as a smart meter retains the last 13 months of usage information in its stored memory, a more likely scenario is that a Registered DCC User (with your explicit approval) will be able to ‘pull’ that data from your meter to use, for example, in a time-of- use tariff price comparison tool.

    Such a tool has already been developed by BEIS. Your cheapest tariff will no longer be based on how much energy is used per year but when that energy is actually consumed.

    A Registered DCC user can be a third-party that has satisfied the DCC that it can access your smart meter data in a secure way. A PCW such as MSE will either have to become DCC-accredited ( lots of exams and expensive secure software), or partner with an organisation that is already a Registered DCC user such as Hildebrand or TMA.

    DCC = Deputy Chief Constable or Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader
    BEIS = (Department for) Business Energy and Industrial Strategy
    PCW = Price Comparison Website
    MSE = MoneySavingExpert
    TMA = Too Many Acronyms

    CAUTION: some of these explanations may be wrong.
