Security grilles

Options
Hi all,

As we have been victims of crime before, we would like to install retractable scurity grilles on the windows in the kitchen which is at the side / rear of the property. These grilles would be behind the glass (basically not "outside" the window).

I would like to know if any permission is required to install these. We are new in the area and my wife is worried about the nieghbours reaction.
Personally I'm not bothered about this if I am within the law to install these devices. My personal security is priority compared to a potential complaint of a neighbour.

Thanks

  • In a Conservation Area you would almost certainly need permission - also if it's a listed building.

Not sure otherwise, but a call to the local Planning Department (Council) would be the first port of call.

If you're worried about the neighbours - and let's not forget the fact as a visible deterrant it might make the thieves think you've something worth nicking, put up some net curtains between the screen and the window too. So they can't be seen.

Unless the building is listed I can't see why there would be a restriction. Your more likely to have problems with the physical fitment... I'm sure the grill suppliers could advise on both questions.
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.
