Best time to get quote question

Hi all, after reading the article on when to compare car insurance prices, I’ve run the quotes and can potentially save £200. 

So a big thank you for that. 

However, we’re thinking of changing the car around renewal time. 

So, is it best to take out the new policy now (24 days ‘early’) and then change the car details, with potentially a fee, nearer the policy start date or wait until we get the new car, which will be on the renewal date?

sweet spot is 21 days from a  previous MSE I remember reading but personal preference

Do you know what car you are going to get?  Many won't allow you to buy until you know the registration.

You are effectively balancing avoiding the last minute buyer penalty against the risk of buying with an insurer that are cheap for Fiestas but you end up buying a Golf which they are hyper expensive for plus an admin fee for the luxury.
