Santander Replacement Debit Card - delayed

I've had an email from Santander to say there will be a delay in me receiving a replacement for my debit card, which is due to expire at the end of this month. They are saying the new card will now arrive around the end of the month.
It's not a problem for me at all - but has anyone else had a message like this? It seems a curious thing to be delayed; is the production process different for renewed debit cards than it is for replacements? If not, are those who report their card lost/stolen/faulty or victims of fraud facing the same delays?

Daughter has had this. Yet her card does not expire till 2022....Life in the slow lane0

I just had an email earlier this week advising that they are replacing my Visa with a Mastercard and that this one will be easier to manage. No date mentioned. My current card is due to expire in September. Even though the 123 is my main account, I rarely ever use the card and am not planning to change that, so a delay won't be an issue for me.0

My card expires soon and I've had this message. I just came here to see if it was a production problem or similar - or just because I'd personally recently made a change to the account.
Changing from Visa to Mastercard could well explain it.0 -
They've been sending out Mastercards since last year tho, so it seems strange they'd hit a problem now.
I wonder if they're short of blanks or something?0 -

Maybe they have identified an issue. It could be as simple as the wrong paperwork been inserted a request not to insert so much post into the delivery network.

I've now had one this morning saying that my new card has been sent - so 4 days between the two messages.0

Yeah, mine has arrived now, a good 18 days before expiry so not that out of the ordinary.Banished to the drawer, probably next be used when they invite me to use it or lose it again in a few years.0

I got a letter a few months back from Santander saying that they were not going to issue a replacement card when my current one expired as it hadn't been used for a while, and if I wanted one then I should get in touch. Nothing about delays or the like. No skin off my back since I don't use it really, but I can understand the concern of a replacement card being delayed if it is for someone's main account.0
