Octopus energy pointless meter readings


We have been customer's with Affect energy now octopus energy for five years registering our meter reading every month online making sure our monthly direct debit is correct and always in credit on our account and as of today it has been hassle free.
We moved house late october 2020 and I registered all of the relevant readings and have the bills to prove this.
We had our bill for July this year and much to our shock had an electric bill of £355 bearing in mind our normal monthly bill is £45, I have complained on the phone today only to be told due to human error we have been billed £355 on the property we left in october 2020 and ocotopus energy have given us £178 as an apology.
I fail to understand why I register my meter readings every month and receive a statement from ocotopus energy every month detailing our usage and cost only to find due to " human error" we were £355 in debit?

    When you moved house you would have inherited the incumbent supplier of the previous occupant.  So unless they were coincidentally also with Octopus you would have been with a different supplier until you switched.  And the new occupants of your old house would have inherited Octopus as their supplier.  There is a lot of potential for human error if all concerned don't keep their suppliers up to date with moving dates and meter readings on that date.
