Am I entitled to a refund on a postponed sports league?
I signed up to a sports league early in 2020, that was advertised as starting in Spring 2020. The season started as planned, but after just a couple of games was cancelled due to COVID.
Despite indoor team sports being permitted to return from May, the season is not scheduled to restart until October. Other similar leagues with the same company have already restarted – the company has said that they are struggling to negotiate a venue for the league I have paid for. Last month I moved away from the area so am unable to participate in the league.
I have requested a refund for the proportion of the season that has not been played (I have also said that I’m happy to take this refund in the form of credit that I can use to enter a more convenient league). My request has been refused, as their company policy is that they only give refunds within 5 days of the start date of the season.
My read of government guidance is that I am entitled to a refund for events postponed due to COVID (I would have thought that my case is even stronger given the reason the league has been postponed can no longer really be blamed on COVID). Am I entitled to a refund, or does their internal company policy take precedence? If I am entitled to a refund, what should my next steps be?
Thanks.
