My husband asked me this question, I presume the answer is yes. He is looking at buying a new phone with is 5G ready, according to the reception scanner we only have 4G in our area.

Yes a 5g phone will worl with 4g, only uou or he can decide whether it's worth paying a premium for the 5g function if you cant use it where you live.. However, that said it will be ready for when (or if) they do geta around to rolling it out to places where you want to use it.
We've only recently (in the last year or so) got 4g (and it's not that reliable either), so I wont be holding my breath whilst waiting for 5G to appearNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
4G version may not be cheaper.
My 5G phone is only £169

We live out in the sticks on the border between Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire, the mobile signal is not that brilliant. He was looking at a Samsung, its almost time for him to replace his phone with E & EE I want him to change to tesco, they are cheaper.0

Get Tesco SIM only & buy the phone from somewhere like Amazon.
5g phone will work on 3G also0 -
You can turn off 5G under settings / networks - turning off the 5G modem with save you battery as 5G modems are quite power hungry.2
