Commissioning time for a Smart Meter with E-on.

Hello. Having had a smart meter installed the fun has begun.

We had a split rate tariff, with E-on,  plus Solar Panels . The display meter fails to show   the change of tariff, it does show when we are exporting to the grid.

So I began that long winded  call process, spoke to 2 people after 4 hrs ! No help there , failed to provide me with any times of the tariff.
Tried email, has a nice reply saying change your tariff , the one you are on is wrong. Wrong !  E-on recommended it years ago.
 Still with me ?
eventually did  the  chat, was asked to photograph the meter at the times it should change. Nothing, came up, even after resetting it  chatted to another lady later who told me it would take up to 28 days for the commissioning to take place ?

Is this right ? or are am I being fobbed off yet again. By the way we were with out power for 3.5 hrs while the installation was being done, with the engineer on the phone for least half that time .

Thanks.

  • You can see whether your meter is transmitting data by signing up for N3rgy.com. Use the ‘I am a consumer’ link.

The principle of smart metering is one meter: one supplier. Before a supplier can ‘pull’ data from your meter it has to send out bespoke security certificates. These certificates are also needed for the supplier to send out tariff information to the ESME and GSME.

FWiW, my experience of most supplier CS teams is that there is very little training or expertise when it comes to smart metering. Octopus, for example, has a trained and dedicated team that deals with smart meter issues.

A bit off the main topic but a tariff that was right years ago might well be wrong today.

Thank you for your prompt reply Dolar. I shall do that this morning. Appreciated.

I did ask this and one of the chat  people said the tariff I was on was correct and the right one. This of course doesn't give you any confidence when you have such conflicting answers.

It may be the best that tariff E.On can offer, but they won't have compared the rest of the market.  You'll have to do that for yourself.

Thanks Gerry 1. I went to Octopus Energy with the usage we have  and surprisingly they were only a few £ cheaper, and not worth  the hassle.

It depends. If you need smart meter support, then its smart team is second to none. For example, a number of us are having an issue with a particular make and model of electricity meter which is not sending out HH usage data. Octopus has forced/cajoled/encouraged the meter manufacturer to identify the issue; produce modified firmware, and rollout it out later this month.
  • Dolor thanks, but better the devil you know. At my age I don't need the hassle with anyone. I can well see a request for some one to come  out and check it. I've asked before over a problem with metering when we had an old c type meter for off peak, 2 out of  didn't understand it, after a phone call ( in the days when you didn't have call centers ) another engineer arrived and was able to sort out the problem.
