Regional smaller companies

Instead of holding global smaller companies, I'm thinking of holding regional. What funds/ investment trusts would you recommend for UK Smaller Companies, Japanese Smaller Companies, European Smaller Companies, US Smaller Companies and Asian Smaller Companies-ex Japan? I'm 28 years old and will be investing in a SIPP. What do you hold as regional smaller companies?

You say your "account valuation isn't big enough to benefit from capped platform charges" for a core holding so it's likely it's not big enough for several satellites in an already small sector. Your 'perfect' portfolio could rapidly become a bit of a dog's dinner. You should walk before you run

Most of our accounts are large enough for capped or fixed charges and I still wouldn't bother with regional small cap funds as my preference is to make each account as simple and low cost as possible to achieve the objectives. If that can be done with a single investment per account that's a great result. We are already spending thousands each year in platform and fund manager fees so have no desire to create more work and cost for unclear benefit. Don't be the excited kid in the candy shop trying to buy everything. Be controlled, be selective, be consistent, accumulate lots of money.ColdIron said:You say your "account valuation isn't big enough to benefit from capped platform charges" for a core holding so it's likely it's not big enough for several satellites in an already small sector.0 -
The forum is more about offering general guidance/pointers and not specific recommendations . If you are looking for this level of detailed advice , you should consider paying for it and /or do the detailed research yourself .GaryMSE said:Instead of holding global smaller companies, I'm thinking of holding regional. I was going to suggest Gary starts a separate thread for each region...

If you are looking for funds at that level of detail I suggest you do your own research so that you can choose the ones that best suit your needs. The standard sources of information are http://www.trustnet.com and http://www,morningstar.co.uk. You would need to get familiar with both.
Unless you have perhaps £100K+ to invest and the experience to make a rational choice you may well find that it is not worth the effort.
I hold:
Artemis US Smaller Companies
Baillie Gifford Japan Small Companies
Liontrust UK Smaller Companies
Matthews Asia Smaller Companies
Threadneedle European Smaller Companies
Those funds were chosen to meet the requirements for my overall portfolio. Whether they are suitable for you may be another matter.

'Small cap' is a relative term. What size capitalisation? Which regions? Why?
My 'small caps' will appear as meaningless as Linton's if viewed without reference to my aims and overall portfolio.
FWIW:
Artemis US Smaller Companies
Jupiter European Smaller Companies
TB Amati UK Smaller Companies
Baillie Gifford Shin Nippon
Fidelity Asian Values
Fidelity China Special Situations.0 -

You seem to want to hold small cap in all investable regions of the world, in which case a global small cap fund would do the same job at lower cost.
FWIW my exposure to UK small cap was via the Barings Small Company and the Finsbury ITs. I held them both for a couple of years, until Brexit and a profit of 50 per cent made the temptation to sell irresistible.
