Company Car - lease extended

Hi all, just a quick query - wasn't sure which category to put it in. Hoping someone can offer advice/guidance.

I usually receive car allowance but this time decided to take the company car option for 3 years (plus a top up I pay to get a better car).

My 3 years is almost up so I decided to go back on car allowance as it's better for my current family arrangement. The company have now said they are extending all leases by 6 months which means I now have to keep the car and continue paying the top up 6 months longer than I agreed.

Is there a way I can get out of this? or do I just suck up the extra 6 month cost :(

Have you spoken with your company? They might want to extend the leases rather than commit to new leases at this stage but as you don't want a lease car next time around they might be happy for yours to go back and pay you an allowance for your own car especially if it won't cost them more than the lease does.
Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.

This happened at my company. All the leases were extended but no one has to make payments beyond the 3 years.
I'd check this isn't an option

Hi yes they don't seem to want to budge on returning on original date. Even people who have 2-3 years left have the added 6 months.
It doesn't seem fair as when we want to return a car earlier we have no chance!

Ok, sorry that was my one and only suggestion. Have you seen jefaz07's comment? Good luck

  • Thanks for the comments. Have double checked with the company and doesnt seem like anything I can do - I'm stuck with the car for an extra 6 months and all the additional costs - including tax rise for the year after its going in to.

This doesn't seem right when I've signed a contract for the car for a specific time and cost - and they've just changed the contract and nothing I can do.

Easier to have blanket company policies than make exceptions that cause internal ruptions. Due to Covid you've done less travelling presumably. From your employers perspective this may well be a decision based on finances and cashflow.  With a further change to policy down the line.
