  • Thank you Jeremy for taking the time to reply. I think I must have been confused because I thought SEISS 1, 2 and 3 were about profit and like you said, i can't have 80% of nothing. Don't ask me where I got it from, but somehow I believed 4 and 5 to be different in that it took turnover into account, not just profit. It is so frustrating because it was my 3rd year of trading when covid hit and I was all set to make a profit as everything had been pretty much paid for and my turnover was on the rise! I made less of a loss in 19/20 than in previous years as I was on course for profit. The biggest problem I have had today, is that I could not find any boxes you refer to and HMRC refer to. I must have clicked on 100s of links today and it always seems to bring you back to the same page. When I finally managed to find 19/20, it just gave a long list of the questions and the answers i gave in the self assessment, but no boxes in sight. What is SA103S and SA103F? Are these different forms than the tax summaries they give you? If so, if you could point me in the right direction, I would much appreciate it. I hunted and hunted. I feel very strongly that I would have made a profit this year if it wasn't for covid, but I have missed out on all the handouts from HMRC. I have just been using my savings to survive. Other peeps who have been earning good profits have been getting lots of help and fledgling businesses like mine who were just coming to fruition and yet to make a profit, got nothing. Seems wrong somehow. Unfortunately I'm one of the people who have slipped through the net. I have a small amount of savings and therefore get no benefits, furlough etc. etc I just had a glimmer of hope that as my turnover was on the up, I might have managed a little bit of a grant  :(

If you have always made a loss, from commencement to 2019/20, you will receive no grant, because you have no profits to base it on. The turnover test only decides whether you get a 30% or an 80% grant, and only applies to SEISS 5, so it is actually a bad thing, not a good thing. It's just another hurdle, and you fall at the previous one.

When you complete a tax return (SA100), you also file a form SA103 if you are self employed. A SA103S (S is for short) is for simple businesses. A SA103F (F is for full) has more boxes for different circumstances. You can see them here:

Open your tax return in your personal tax account to see what you filed, but if you have made no profit up to and including 2019/20, you are not going to receive anything. HMRC will regard you as ineligible (and if you received any income at all from other sources, you would fail the 50% other income test as well).
