Selling car routine
Options
Hi
i’ve just sold my car via gumtree. The chap who was interested came yesterday to look at the car was very happy and said he would like to buy it, we agreed on a price and he left a £100 deposit.

He obviously has to come back and pay the rest, in the mean time he needs to tax the car as it is SORN.. however the car is still in my name but i haven’t really “sold” it yet as he hasn’t given me the full money so was unsure if I contact dvla or not and how to go about this next step.
If anyone could advise that would be great,
thank you

See the link below as to how the buyer taxes the car. I wouldn't hand any paperwork over until the full payment is received but you can give them the 12 digit number required to tax it. They do it online and it's instant so they could possibly tax it on collection.
Taxing a vehicle - GOV.UK (vehicletax.service.gov.uk)
Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.1 -
He can tax it online over his phone - or you can let him use a computer - in seconds flat once the transaction's complete.1

The other thing you can do is transfer the car over to him online whilst he waits. Saves potential hassle later1

1. Buyer pays you in full.2. Hand them the new keeper supplement to tax it and they keep this slip too - https://vehicletax.service.gov.uk/3. You go on https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle and complete the new buyer details
