Android phone problems with texting

A friend of mine has a galaxy S21 running latest Android and recently has had problems with receiving texts - something has changed.

They are on PAYG and thus do not normally have mobile data switched on.

They can send texts with no problem, but now cannot receive texts until they connect to WiFi, at which point all the texts for the day come through at once.

It may be a setting on the phone - an anyone point me in the right direction where to look?

As mentioned above, sending is fine and they have verified sent texts are not queued for WiFi but are received immediately by the recipient.

Many thanks

  • Sounds like they have 'Chat' turned on; turn it off:

Sorry! Did the middle of my sentence interrupt the beginning of yours!

thanks for that - chat is not on - the 'agree' button under messages settings for chat is still there and has not been touched

edit: they had to 'agree' to the t&c then they got the menu selection to turn chat off and send by sms. i also had to do the same on my phone to send by sms and be able to communicate with them as before

Sounds like a Samsung update or something.

i know it's a first world problem, but annoying when sms texting has worked for 20 + years and now it stops working because it is replaced by chat or whatever without asking or even letting you know....

luckily i have the forum to ask but granny ...
