One possibility would be to look at the support being given, and see if some of it could be provided in a different way, for example independently hiring a cleaner / home help to give some of the domestic help. I don't know what the going rate for cleaners in your Mum's area is, and you'd need to make sure the boundaries are clear - eg if your mother needs help getting to the toilet, and was getting fewer visits from the carers, would that be a problem?

However, it would increase the complexity, and as you're not local it might not be worth the risk.

I agree, and I have suggested this and offered to investigate and pay for this too.  However, my mother's rather smitten with her current carers and I think she sees them as 'friends', which is rather awkward.  Hopefully, if social services do complete a thorough assessment, as Elsie has indicated they are obliged to do, we'll have a clearer view as to what level of care she needs, in their opinion (with personal care vs domestic support).

Having said that, one of my friends works for a very well thought of agency in this area, where all kinds of support are on offer: sometimes helping with laundry, sometimes with cooking, sometimes with personal care, sometimes just offering companionship. I am sure they are paid the same hourly rate regardless of what they are doing, which is why it could get complicated if you tried to contract independently for some of mum's care needs.

Also worth considering the future: is Mum likely to potter along in much the same way for the foreseeable future, or is it possible / likely that there could be an increasing deterioration, or a sudden crisis?
