John Lewis trick..?

Hi

I just wanted to share something that's left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

I bought some sunglasses at John Lewis the other day, and the salesman had just offered a couple a discount because they bought two pairs. When I decided on mine he said 'oh we only have the display pair so I'll knock 10% off', so we agreed to that.  The downside was that they were non returnable but they're still guaranteed. He said the same to the couple who got a discount before us, non returnable.

I felt weird about it for some reason and googled the sunglasses and they're half the price on numerous websites. I'm wondering if this is a tactic by the salesman in John Lewis to avoid returns due to their price match promise. My mistake obviously but disappointed a shop like John Lewis would be doing this...what do you think, am I being cynical?

Where's the trick?  The price was clearly stated, a conditional discount offered and you had the option to not proceed with the purchase.  As I understand it, you can still make a price match claim if the criteria are met, one criterion of which is that they should be a high street competitor.  If you're finding lower prices on various websites, those don't qualify for the price match anyway.   I can't believe that JL are shifting stock under the guise of it being display stock which can't be returned for a change of mind reason, just to minimise returns.

John Lewis don't price match against website - have you found them at a lower price elsewhere on the high street?

In general, you will get a better price online for a lot of things compared with a shop, and especially compared with JL
