Rendering - Work not complete.

At the beginning of June we accepted a quote for rendering on our house.
The work was to include, taking off all the old render, repairs to brickwork, one replacement lintel and then the render.
Work initially started very promptly and he guy who came was nice, he seemed to care about the house and seemed to want to do a good job. it quickly became apparent that the work had been sub-contracted to him from the company we hired, we didn't mind to much as long as the work got done.
during the first initial weeks things went well, but it became apparent there where issues with the job, taking off the render was a bigger job than he'd expected and 2 weeks in they hadn't got even half the render off. The sub-contractor himself started coming less and leaving his lads to the work, but by week 3 they told us they could no-longer come as they had not been paid.
We spoke to the sub-contractor and he explained that he'd run out of money to do the work, paying the lads a day rate the initial money that had been given to him had run out. We ended up ringing up the main company and making an early payment on stage payment so the contractor could get some money. I know this was stupid, but it seemed to be the only option to get things moving again.
Unfortunately despite this relationships between the contactor and the main company seem to have broken down, it appears they are having an argument over my house and how the work will be completed and who pay's for it. When i ask they say they have given him extra money, he says they haven't.... and i'm piggy in the middle and both give me different story's.
The more weeks that go by the less we see anyone, if i ring the contractor he dodges my calls for days at a time... then suddenly appears from no-where promises me the world does a days work and then disappears.
Initially we where sympathetic with his situation, as he seemed to genuinely care about the house. As a subcontractor i suspect his cut is a lot less than our quote... so that won't have left him with much wiggle room when it was under estimated. i suspect he simply can't afford to continue the work on my house, which is why he's arguing with the main company.
When i call the main company they are always very sympathetic but seem to shift the blame onto the contractor ... the thing is i DID NOT HIRE THE CONTRACTOR! i hired them.... we have been very sympathetic and understanding during this while thing but 8 weeks in i STILL have scaffold around my house and only 2/3rd of the old render is off my house never mind getting it re-rendered.
I've seen the contractor 1-2 days a week for the past 4 weeks and yet again this morning he didn't show up, without any contact and where he was or any idea of when he might turn up instead.
What can i do?
