Movers costs in London going up?

We in process of moving about half a mile round the corner. Moving from 3 bed (but with only one actual bed in it) to a 4 bed.

We have stuff, but nothing crazy. No appliances, no outdoor furniture etc.

The quotes we've got so far are 3k-4k+

Seems mad - are prices shooting up due to demand, or are we picking badly?

A lot of people have been moving out of London since the pandemic, which may explain some of it, though I thought that had somewhat subsided

I've heard of rising prices in the South of England (outside London). Movers are so busy at the moment they don't mind losing some business by quoting high.

That does seems really high, even if it is now market rate! Do you need to be moved out on the morning of completion, or could a man with a van and multiple trips be an option?

There's a well publicised shortage of HGV drivers in general (due to a combination of BREXIT and COVID),  with many companies competing and offering higher wages for their sevices, so it may be in part a reflection of that.

That’s probably 5 to 6 times higher than I’d expect it to be.

I’m moving soon from Essex to Cambridgeshire, around 30 miles away and we’re also moving from a 3 to 4 bed, including 3 actual beds. Firm is London based. I was quoted £800. Happy to pass the details on if you’re interested.
  • The removals company base their quotes on sq footage so the fact you have 1 bed is irrelevant, did they come and do a walk around? They are also in high demand which yes leads to supply and demand which means they can charge what they like as someone will pay it as they need it.

However your prices are quite high, have you gained multiple quotes?

    Yes please.

Two of them did video walk arounds, one did a detailed call to discuss every bit of furniture. I'd be more confident if someone had actually come round.

We were quoted £1700 in (South East) London in June for a similar move so that's a lot cheaper (we did budget version in the end and got man and van total cost about 400)

We're moving 7.5 miles 3 bed house full of stuff to the brim, quotes we got were £1,600-1,800 for removals plus £500 for packing. That sounded way too expensive and we went with a man and a van, 2 journeys of luton van and 3 people helping us move for £600. My sister moved from 1 bed flat to a house for £198 (also in London), so inspired us to look for cheaper options.
