Apple Pay stopped working - battery?

I have an iPhone 8, and I use apple pay several times a week.  For the past couple of weeks, apple pay has ceased working - I can activate it but the screen just shows "hold near reader" and fails to recognise that it is being held next to a card reader.  I tried it in more than one shop, and with more than one payment card.
This may be merely coincidence, but recently the battery health has also started to show as "Service" - battery health significantly degraded.  Could this be the reason explain why apple pay has stopped working?  My google search couldn't find an acknowledged link, but the "quality" of sites returned at the top of the search results didn't give me much confidence.
I suppose I will have to bite the bullet and replace either the battery or the phone :unamused:

Battery health shouldn't affect the NFC used for Apple Pay at all. Is the phone in any kind of case that might be affecting it - the signal strength for NFC is very low and can be affected by certain cases?

I'd try the usual reboot of the phone if you haven't already.

Thank you - I thought it was worth asking.
Sadly, a reboot didn't resolve it.  I do have a case, but it's the basic apple leather case, and I have been using the same kind with apple pay for donkeys, so I doubt that's the issue.
It like a battery replacement probably won't fix this either, so it's either 2 repairs or time for a new phone.
