Universal credit overpayment

We was claiming universal credit but in January they gave us a payment of £700 but hmrc didn’t tell about my wages and said I earned £0 I gave my earnings to them and closed my account I have rang them 3 times and they say we owe nothing and letter would of been generated straight away of overpayment. I’m just worried I don’t want to get a bill next year I’d rather pay off now has anyone else been in same situation?

thank you

I'm not sure about dates here.

Did you start a job in January?

Did you close your UC account in January?

This may be due to your assessment period.

    Read this:

    Assessment Period - Turn2us

If your wages were not paid during your assessment period then you would still be entitled to UC.

    So dates are very important.

When did you apply for UC?

    When were your wages paid?

  • Yes this happened to me last year in March, regarding an advance and ultimately overpayment, tried telling DWP I had been overpaid, regrettably whilst it was on the cusp of a national problem, it took 4 months for the letter to be generated and they were very quick when they wanted their money back at a point when it suited them to do attachment of earnings before I knew it.

Though I'm getting better, I hadn't the willpower to keep anything aside so more recently when I had a far smaller advance and only one lot of UC covered first payment as I opted for two lots of repayment of £100.00 to pay back the £200.00 and again lucky to get of UC quickly, the first month I was paid from employment, I truly didn't wait round for any letter, got the bank details from the gov site for DWP debt management, banged in the 2nd and final payment on a 2 hour payment and haven't heard anything - I did notice the latest time on UC I got the strong impression they do like defaulting to A-O-E from something that came across on the journal, something made me realise I would be better paying them without waiting to be approached, so very determined this time, wasn't going to be in same position.

Unless you don't have the money or genuinely feel there is a query, do not wait around for a letter to reach you, because you can be sure it won't coincide with payday, making it easy for them to obtain A-O-E.
