What happens to protected No Claims Bonus after an accident

I have a 9+ years NCB which I chose to protect on my current car insurance with AA. The renewal is coming up and I'm wondering whether I still say I have a NCB on the renewal forms? What does the 'protected' status actually mean? The accident I had didn't involve any other motorists, but it is down as 'my fault' for that reason. Interested to hear people's thoughts and experiences with this.

You state if you want it protected or not and pay the extra premium if you do. NCDP generally allows you to have up to 2 fault accidents in 3 policy years but no more than 1 in one year... ie if you have another fault claim in the next 2 years you'll retain your 9+ years if you keep the NCDP going... if you have two fault accidents then the second will cause a loss of NCD.
Remember that NCD is simply a discount (and most people have maximum discount) and whilst you'll still get your 70-75% discount the base premium can continue to rise due to the claims even with NCDP0
