Afternoon all,

My wife has received a random P45 from HMRC (DWP?) this Friday just gone and we're slightly worried about it.

She's been on ESA for nearly two years now, and last August she tried work. This didn't work out and she ended up reapplying for ESA within 2 weeks of cancelling it, and was then placed in the support group shortly after.

The P45 states its for the period before this blip, for benefits ending on 19th August (The last day of her original claim).

She has been receiving money since, on the support group rate.

Is this just an incredibly late P45 and nothing to worry about?

For reference, here's a timeline:

March 2020 - 19th August 2020: Original ESA Claim (assessment rate, never assessed)
19th August 2020: Tried work, didn't work.
31st August 2020: Reapplied for ESA. (got assessment rate until below)
17th November 2020: Placed in support group

Sounds like a very late P45. She should have got a P60 if she was claiming on 5th April 2021

Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

We did indeed get a P60, sorry maybe should have included that in the original post.
  • HMRC only issue P45's in two instances,

    1.  When a member of staff leaves.
    2.  After someone has claimed a refund for the current tax year using form P50

So if your wife didn't work for HMRC and hasn't completed a P50 it is highly unlikely to be from HMRC.

Does the P45 reflect the taxable ESA paid in the period from April 2020 to August 2020?

It does indeed, so presumably from DWP rather than HMRC.

Yes.  But why they have only issued it nearly a year later is a mystery!
