Do letting agents have to join the likes of TPOS?

I know that years ago, letting agents weren't required by law to join the likes of TPOS and the whole thing was completely voluntary... meaning TPOS would only issue measly little £50 fines to letting agents who weren't looking after their tenants' properties properly.
I recently read something about it now being a legal requirement that they have to sign up... is this true?

Yes. Legally they must join one of the two redress schemes ...

Great thanks, that's reassuring going by how useless some of my former letting agents were when this kind of thing was optional!
Am I right in thinking this law will have passed within the last 8 years or so?0 -
