Reupholstering a sofa...

...was never something I had previously considered, but now I am. Its a good quality sofa with a decent heavy oak frame, so possibly worth the investment compared to new from the furniture cheapies.

What kind of price should I expect to pay for a simple but hardwearing fabric? (I can go fancy with cushions etc). Simple design, dimensions roughly 1500mm (w) x 800mm (d) x 1100mm (h).

I paid 50pounds for fire retardent fabric from and end of range shop.
I'm horrified at the cost of fabric these days even our end of range. But that does limit your choice- maybe.
It's a bit how long is a piece of string. Depends if you fall in love with chalfont or are just looking for colour.
It wasn't as hard as i thought. Intended to buy new later but when I looked they weren't as well covered as mine for a couple of thousand.

Have you thought of doing an upholstery evening class,my wife did many years ago and really enjoyed it.The chair that she reupholstered took pride of place in our daughters room for many years.
  • My Mum spent a ridiculous amount of money having her 3 seater and armchair done, she stupidly responded to an advert in a magazine and never shopped around. The man that dropped it off after said he'd have charged half the price. I can't recall just how much she paid but it was definitely over £1k.

I think you need to shop around and go with local recommendations

I haven't on account of the fact that I am working 7 days a week inc evenings to pay for my pet projects. Truthfully I am now used to leaving stuff to the professionals and doing what I do best to earn a wage.

Do you think you just want new fabric - is all the cushioning OK?
I wouldn't expect much if any change from £1000.

Cushioning is fine. £1k is a lot of money but not when compared to the amount that can easily be wasted on cheap and poorly-made sofas that don't last.

Is the cushioning fire retardant stuff? I'm not well versed in these things though.

It is indeed. Its literally just the upholstery than needs updating. The rest is as sound as a pound.
