Vehicle Emission Duty (VED) Query
Hi Guys,
For petrol and diesel cars, if a car is registered after April 2017 and worth over £40,000 at brand new then the extra £335 needs to be paid on top of the £155 VED.
Scenario 1 - Car registered June 2017
June 2018 - VED - £490
June 2019 - VED - £490
June 2020 - VED - £490
June 2021 - VED - £490
June 2022 - VED - £490
June 2023 - VED - £155 no extra £355
Regardless of whether the car has been SORN'd or in use the above case will apply. is this correct?
Scenario 2 - Car registered August 2017
Assume car purchased July 2021. so,
July 2021 - VED - £490
July 2022 - VED - £490
July 2023 - VED - £490
August 2023 - VED - £155?
Instead of renewing my road tax in July 2023, can I SORN it for a month in July 2023 up to past the registration date in August and then renew road tax at which time I am only liable for £155 road tax, is this understanding correct?
Can I save myself £335 like this?

Put the plate into https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/
There will be a date shown for "Additional Rate applicable until" - 5yrs from the first reg date.
Buy VED on or before that date, pay the additional rate.
Buy VED after that date, don't pay the additional rate.
It's that simple. And, yes, if you SORN then re-tax...3 -
I assume the additional rate is not pro-rata'd like the VED i.e. no refund even if you SORN vehicle but VED is refunded accordingly.AdrianC said:Put the plate into https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/
