Fixing old laptop

I have a very old Dell Latitude running XP that I've used to watch DVD's.
It now cuts out 15/20 seconds after I switch it on. This is just after the light next to the cylinder symbol flickers.
Is it worthwhile thinking about fixing it?

the cylinder thingy is, I think, the HDD access light.

You could try running diagnostics to check it

Will the cost just to diagnose at a computer shop be more than it's worth?

What can you run if the laptop won't switch on?

  • I'd try taking the battery out and powering it exclusively from mains to rule that out first.

    In a nutshell, no.
It's not about the laptop, it's more about you. The fact that you don't even bother to quote the model number and the fact that you are still running XP on it, tells us there is no chance of you attempting to fix it yourself. It's not worth taking it to a shop. The cost will be prohibitive. Fix it yourself or scrap it.  It likely needs a clean out and perhaps thermal paste reapplying. Cost £1 plus your labour. If then working fine I would max out the RAM and fit a solid state drive.

I'm confused. Does it turn on plugged in?

If not take out the battery and unplug any devices and press the power button for 30 seconds. Then replace the battery and reconnect back to mains and see if that does the trick.

Which model of Latitude is it? You can get one running windows 10 in working order for £50 on ebay so that gives you an idea of what the XP version is worth
