Can anyone tell me why when I get quotes and it says I can save then I check the actual tariff and the standing charge is higher on the new tariff???? The monthly direct debit quoted shows as cheaper but the actual tariff cost is not??? And I think that’s the mistake I’ve made moving to Eon next , still trying to find out why my usage has increased tenfold in 2 months , very worried

When you did the quote did you input your actual usage?

the standing charge is higher is the unit charge also higher?

Eon next have 0 exit fees on all their tariffs so you can switch to another supplier once you have been supplied for 28 days

Energy suppliers and price comparison websites are required to use a methodology based on a rolling 12 months price projection which ASSUMES that you will do nothing at the end of your contract, and therefore you will default to the supplier’s most expensive tariff.

It follows that if you carry out a comparison with one month of your contract left, the cost for the next 12 months will be 1 month on present tariff plus 11 months on the standard variable tariff. When compared to fixed tariffs on the market which have a lower 12 month cost, it gives you a saving even though the new fixed tariffs will cost you more.

The problem that Ofgem has is that an assumption has to be made. Flawed as it is, the assumption works for the millions who have never switched.
