Another Android phone problem

I've recently started having a problem when "waking up" the phone after it's been left.

When I reactivate it, I'm finding numerous stacked error messages.  White boxes with "name of app" Not responding and options to Close App, Wait or Send Feedback.   I don't know if this is significant but I've noticed that the "front" message is usually Google is not responding.

I don't know if that means it is the first of the stack or the last (or even if it makes any difference.  This morning, I've cleared Google is not responding, followed by Maps is not responding, then Speedtest etc, then Google Play Services, then BT Wifi, then Contacts.  Sometimes it will be other random apps but the error messages still usually seem to start with the Google one.

I've gone into the settings for the various apps & cleared the caches but not used the "Manage Space option in case that deletes stuff that it would be better to keep.

I'm not a big user & the phone is often just left on a kitchen cabinet while not in use.  It might only get looked at maybe twice a day.  But I have noticed a couple of occasions where the screen has lit up on it's own so presumably that is when an app is trying to start?

Is a factory reset likely to be an option?

If it helps, the phone is a Cubot KingKong ( not a common one but chosen for ruggedness, shockproof). 3G only running Android 7.

  • Sounds a bit like a lack of RAM when apps are trying to update.Do you have a few GB of space available?

Settings is showing 9.95GB out of 16 GB internal storage used.   There is also a64GB SD card which only has 1.14GB  used.
  • So space not a problem, have you got a decent internet connection (3g and/or wi-fi)?

Oh yes.  Full fibre FTTP.  Just speed tested the wifi at 41.5Mbps DL and 28.1 Mbps UL.

Also, updates don't seem to be a problem.  Just the rogue apps that appear to be trying (and failing?) to open at random.

You're looking at the wrong parameter. According to Cubot's website your phone may only have 2GB of system ram. That's not a lot.

To find out system ram usage launch Google Play and click your account icon then 'manage apps and devices'. The third parameter listed shows system ram. Less than ~400MB free and updates may fail.

However the symptoms may indicate a more fundamental issue with Google account auth. It may not be necessary to do a factory reset. Removing your google account, rebooting then re-adding your google account may be required.

Thanks for this.  A closer look in the Settings tab shows that there is indeed only 2 GB of RAM.  But when I've looked in the memory tab, it says that they system is only using an average of 1.1GB (?)   I've followed your suggestion & deleted the Google Account, rebooted & reinstalled it.  We'll see how it goes & I'll let you know.

Looks like that's sorted it.  Thanks again for the help.
