Buying a second hand car without V5C

Hi,
A friend is selling a car and my son is interested in it. However we've just been informed that when the friend bought it (around 2-3 years ago) he forgot to send the buyer slip to DVLA.
Will this have any consequences if we go ahead and buy it

Thanks
Paul

So in the last 2-3yrs, he hasn't SORNed it, he hasn't taxed it...?

At the best, it'll cost £25 for a new V5C.

Well you dont need to send the buyer slip to the DVLA, the seller sends off the V5C and you receive the new one.
He never received one and never chased it up?  So he has never used the car on the road?
If he did tax it then he should have the V5C.

No V5C as long as you trailer the car home and leave it parked off the road until the documents arrive
then pray there was no logbook loan on the vehicle?

Your son can buy the car and then send the buyer slip with your son's details and today's date.  It will mean one less RK than otherwise.

So long as you know the friend is being fully truthful and the tale about not registering the car is not covering up the fact the friend does not own the car to sell.

Its quite easy.  No V5C no deal.
Absolutely. If the friend wants to sell the car they arrange to get V5C first

Too many horror stories come from buying the car and then applying for the paperwork.

By all means agree to buy the car, but don't hand over any cash until he's got the V5 in his hand. Because as soon as the money is handed over there's no incentive for the friend to do anything about it.

Current owner can get a new V5 in a few days for £25 provided he is the registered keeper, https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-log-book
If he is not the keeper then walk away.
You can check when the last V5 was issued here https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ and also check if it is currently taxed an MOTd

Sorry, the seller would need the V5C for me to buy the vehicle.

Plus I won't be able to tax it due to lack of new keeper supplement.

Same process, same cost for a new keeper without a V5C/2. But it does take longer, because the last known keeper is contacted.

But that involves a piece of paper that will join the other 1.4 million bits of paper waiting to be processed at DVLA.
