Private number plate on a car stolen a decade ago

Hope this is the right place for this:

My sister had a car stolen in 2012 with a private plate on it.  I was the third car she had stolen in a couple of years so she didn't bother replacing it.  She didn't SORN the car or anything like that and after she got he insurance money didn't think about it again.  The plate used to belong to my mum in the 90s and I asked after it the other day.  She said she would help get it back and I could have it if that was still possible, but I would need to find out how.

I have searched the DVLA website and it says the number plate is still attached to the car (and the car needs taxing in July 2012!).  We don't have the V5 for the stolen car.  Would it be possible to register the car as 'gone' and then somehow claim the plate back?  Or does it belong to the insurance company/government now?

Thanks!

Once the insurance company paid out for it they became the owners of the vehicle but I'd start by contacting DVLA and asking them whether anything can be done.
Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.

Can't see that DVLA will be able to help in anyway.
Any entitlement you had to the plate is gone.
The insurance company own it now, contact them.

Too late now, the limit to apply is 2 years and 6 months from when DVLA were informed.

I would imagine that the car was scrapped (or sold on at auction) with the 'plate on it if it was recovered, or the insurance informed DVLA it was stolen when they paid out.

Is the 'plate available to purchase from DVLA, they may have released it for reuse?

If DVLA were never informed that it was stolen/scrapped, the insurer might be up for a fine for no tax/SORN.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
