11 months driving and want to switch insurer - what will happen to NCB?

My insurance is due for renewal at the beginning of September, so at the beginning of August I'd like to run a search on a comparison site to find the best deal in the hopes of getting the 'looked way in advance' discount. However, this is my first year of driving so in August I will have completed 11 months with no claims. If I switch insurer I will presumably have to say I have 0 years NCB right? Even though by the time the insurance is up for renewal I will hopefully have 1 year NC.

So what happens to those 11 months of no claims? Do they get forgotten? Or is this stuff tracked across insurers? Am I best off just renewing with my current insurer so I definitely get a 1 year NCB? Or leaving it till the last minute to switch?

If tyou cancel early you get nothing.

Tell the existing company to not renew and search around for new insurance for the date after it ends. Of go back to your current company and tell them what they quated for you as a new customer and take that. Hopefully will not make muc hdifference these days.

There should be no overlap of insurance so the new one will start straight after the old one expires. You will not actually switch until the renewal date even though you get a quote early. So you will have one year NCB.

Most comparison sites will only let you get a quote up to 30 days before the renewal date, 3 weeks before the renewal date is considered optimum. Don't forget to tell your insurer you dont wish to renew if you have auto renewal set up. The wording here is key, dont say you want to cancel your insurance, just that you dont want to renew. They will often come back with a much cheaper quote at this point anyway.

Thanks, I wasn't going to cancel, just get a quote early set to switch at the renewal date because I heard it's cheaper if you get the quote 30 days in advance of the start of the policy.

When I shop around I won't be able to say I have 1 year NCB though right? Because I don't yet, only 11 months. So do I just say 0 NCB?

If you plan to change over it's fine to say you have the NCB. Remember to get proof from your current provider at the end thopugh. They will send it/email it to you.

I have never been asked to provide it, though OH has, and you can bet in the event of a claim they will ask.

Though of couse if you don't end up getting it or if they ask for proof stck to the requirements and inform them asap.

Get your quote about 28 days before renewal.  The quote will usually be valid until the renewal date or about 30 days, whichever is longest.

You can say that you have 1 year's NCD because that's what you will have when the new policy begins.

Obviously if anything happens to change that before the new policy starts (eg you have an accident in the last few days of the old policy) you will need to tell the new insurer, and they might well change your premium as a result. (So try not to have any accidents).

Answer the questions as at the inception date so, for example, 1 years NCD
