cracked windscreen

Driving home the other day a lorry drove past and a stone hit my windscreen; there's a 4 inch vertical crack up the windscreen. I've never dealt with this problem before, do I call my insurance or just find a company to repair or replace the windscreen?

If you don't use your insurer's preferred supplier it may cost you more. Check your insurance documents. There will probably be a number to call for windscreens. You pay the excess and your insurer pays the rest.

Plenty of independents around happy to do the job much cheaper than nationals.
If its not bonded screens are not that difficult to change.

Aye but the OP will only pay the reduced charge of £50-£100.  OP needs to check prices to see which route would be cheaper or ask them if they deal with your insurer.

If you go through the insurance route though do you not havce to declare it as a claim and potentially face increased premiums at renewal?

    Not usually with windscreen claims.

I've never declared windscreen claims and my renewal after replacing my windscreen on insurance didn't list it as a claim.

You should be declaring them but they don't affect NCD usually.
