People don't pay national insurance on earnings once they reach state retirement age so it it makes sense that they don't get National Insurance credits after this age either

The last full tax year before your birthday which you reach state pension age is the last year to count towards your state pension, so there would be no point in receiving NI credits after reaching state pension age, or more accurately after the start of the tax year (April 6th) in which you reach state pension age.

So if you are born on 5th April, and retire when reaching state pension age, the last 364 days of NI contributions (or credits) would no increase your state pension, but you still have to pay them. Someone born a day later on 6th April would be fine. So for those working up to state pension age, best to be born on or just after 6th April.
