OP here;..spoke to NatWest Visa department this morning and they confirmed that they had a full and complete record of my transaction on Saturday for £10,200 and it had been approved and cleared,...that’s why we got the message “Payment Successful”.

However, at that point the merchant i.e. MotoNovo should ‘claim’ the payment to ensure the funds are then actually transferred from NatWest to MotoNovo. That’s where the process broke down apparently.

I spoke to MotoNovo this morning and they, somewhat reluctantly, admitted they are aware of “issues with their debit-card payment system” !...why we weren’t made aware of these ‘issues’ when I spoke to them on Friday is somewhat annoying.

MotoNovo’s payment portal on their website accepts payment by debit-card or credit-card. No other payment method is allowed via their payment portal.

However, they’ve informed us that the full payment can be paid by ‘bank transfer’,...praise the lord!

One lesson learned from this tale is that a “Payment Successful” notification from NatWest Visa shouldn’t  be taken at face value.

Many thanks to all who replied.

That's not necessarily a good thing, given the lesser protection available to the payee payer (i.e. no chargeback facility) when using this route....

Edit: of course it's the payer who benefits from such protection not the payee!

Fair comments, well noted;...however, 'bank transfer' appears to be our only payment option at the moment due to MotoNovo’s  ‘card payment system’ inadequacies. They won’t take the outstanding balance by D/D and it’s too late to send a cheque because the next monthly payment is due very shortly and we need to pay off the full balance before then.

Once the funds are in the creditors account then why would you wish/need chargeback?

It could potentially come into play in the event of problems with the car, but yes, a fairly marginal benefit in this scenario....
