Weeds and Vegetable Plot

We have a small vegetable plot. Last year we grew potatoes in one half of it and brassicas/legumes/salad in the other half.
This year, due to more urgent house renovations/other stuff, we haven't planted anything although we did get rid of the weeds and dug the whole plot over when we had time and inclement weather.
The weeds have, of course, returned but only on half of the plot. The side where the potatoes were grown last year is completely clear and weed free. It's really rather odd.
There were weeds on both parts until we removed them all but it's a bit strange that they only came back on the one side. The weed-free side is more exposed so has a bit more sun every day but I am at a loss as to how to explain it.
Anyone more knowledgeable (which will be 100% of the people who visit this section) have any idea why? It doesn't really matter, just curious.

It's often recommended to plant spuds to clear weeds, I don't think there is any magic in it but spuds require more soil cultivation before, during & after growingPrior to spud planting it's dig over & then trench, during growth it's earthing up as they grows[all fresh weed seedlings get buried a couple of times if not more],as they grow the haulm gets huge and smothers most fresh weed seedlingsHarvest is digging up, which uproots any new seedlings and buries themEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens2
