Visitor Oyster Card for family

Our large family group is visiting London on Monday for one week, staying in Acton. We will have a car, but assume that public transport will be the best way to get around to see the sights. It looks like a Visitor Oyster Card will be the most cost effective way for us to do this, so I'm looking for some advice on exactly how this would work for our group. We will have four adults, three 11-15yos, and two under-11s. Reading TfL's site, it looks like we can't get a single family card. So it seems to me that each adult would need their own card, with the children added on to the adult cards. I'm not clear about either how to do that, or how it would work at eg. the barrier for the tube. All advice gratefully received.

Adults can use contactless cards, rather than Oyster.  Daily charges will still be capped.

If you want child discount for the over 11s they need a visitor Oyster which you then need validating as a child Oyster so the discount is applied.  Tube staff are helpful and will assist.

Travelling with children

Children under 11 travel free on buses and trams. Children under 11 also travel free on Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail and some National Rail services when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (up to four children per adult).

If you're travelling with children aged 11-15, buy a Visitor Oyster card before you leave home and, when you arrive in London, you can ask a member of our staff to add a Young Visitor discount to a Visitor Oyster card at:

• most Tube stations
• our 8 Visitor Centres
• Victoria National Rail station ticket office

The Young Visitor discount gives your child half adult rate pay as you go discount for up to 14 days.

You can also buy child Travelcards online for children aged 11-15.
