Irrespective of time of day, there is a cost associated with a response / call out service that results in a different charge to planned work.

This is the key part of your post - once you've accepted a high quote for the job, it's a bit late to complain about how much cheaper you could have got it if you'd shopped around.

    Oh dear...

Back in 2018 when the "Beast from the East" was at full ferocity I'd gone out to the shops and when I came back I realised I'd locked myself out.  I'd left my phone in the house and all my neighbours were out.  It was a Sunday, my wife was visiting her sick mother, and I had to go to the hospice opposite to ask somebody - anybody - to find and phone a locksmith for me.

When he arrived he was able to open the door immediately because... I hadn't shut it properly when I went out.

Our door sticks sometimes when you shut it.  It looks closed but isn't.  When I initially returned to the house I never went any further than realising I didn't have my keys.  I didn't bother to check that the door was actually closed.

I still paid him his call out fee because he'd attended promptly on a Sunday in appalling weather.  It was my fault, not his, that I was too stupid to make sure I really was locked out before summoning him.

I never told my wife but I do always remind her to make sure that the front door is always closed properly...
