just got a new phone and don't want my contacts transferred (as I foolishly synced my mail account and there are 100s of contacts I don't want and I can't find out how to get rid other than doing one at a time). Can I transfer my apps and the info on them or do I have to download each app and set it up again from scratch?

if it is a samsung phone you can use samsung smartswitch - untick the 'contacts' checkbox and it won't transfer those. Tick the 'apps' box.
on your new phone you will still have to re-signin etc to your transferred apps ie the apps will be transferred but you will still have to set each one up
not sure if smartswitch works on non-samsung phones1 -
If the contacts are on your Google account, then when you sign in to your Google account on the new phone they sync automatically. You should be able to edit them thus:

Any Android phone will allow you to load the apps from another phone as long as you use the same Google account to log in. Same with the contacts, as mentioned above, if they have been saved to the Google account.Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Would it be easier to log into your google account on a PC and weed out some of your contacts that way?
