Get milk delivered, worried about it in heat as I sleep late - any ideas on how to keep it chilled?

I get the old fashioned doorstep deliveries, the thing is though it arrives normally around 6am sometimes as early as 5am and I normally even on a good day sleep till around 10am, a few times I have woken up during the night to take milk in, but the past weeks heat has gotten to me and I have often slept 10-12 hours on top as being so hot not falling asleep till 3 or 4am so the milk can be in the heat for 6-8 hours.

I was thinking of getting a small chiller box and leaving the empties in it so when milk delivery arrives they can put it in there, that also means passers by won't notice the milk so won't try to steal it (never happened to me but has to family who get deliveries)

Seriously? I would just buy it from the supermarket until normal UK temperatures resume.

I wouldn't go to so much trouble, just buy it from the supermarket as @Rosa_Damascena said.  You're lucky to be able to stay in bed till that time.

I am all for keeping the milkman in a job, but they don't help themselves by charging way more than the supermarket.

We used to have a milkman when we first moved here in the mid 90's but had to stop it eventually as the milk wasn't being delivered until after we'd left for work, so it was out on the step in the heat all day.

    1) A bucket of cold water

    2) Set your alarm early

I prefer the local milkman, its only 80p a pint and the quality is far better than supermarket bought.  I nornally buy supermarket stuff for coffee/tea and to put in food but the delivered stuff I just drink straight as its so nice.

I would use the cool box.  Put a few frozen blocks in as late as possible the night before.

Or if you don't want to leave a cool box outside you could just use a thick cardboard box and still put the freezer blocks in that. I shouldn't think you'll be the only customer on your milkman's round who's improvising a solution to this very hot weather so you could always go for a walk and keep your eyes peeled for inspiration.

I have milk delivered and agree with you OP. It is not expensive and i prefer having only what i need, delivered to the door.
Our milkman typically arrives around midnight and i take the milk in at 6am. On a weekend i sleep later leaving the milk outside for around 8 hours without a problem.
A simple solution being a bucket of cool water as suggested above.

I do now remember the days when moo-juice was nice enough to drink straight from the bottle.

Tbh I think the trade-off is cool bottles or uninterrupted sleep, I know which I'd prefer. OTOH this is a short term problem that will right itself come September.

I have seen special insulated milk bottle holders on people's doorsteps. I think a cool box and ice packs would work better though and also useful for other things like defrosting the freezer and picnics.

I have lived in a house that has milk delivered since I was born in 1971,  I have never known milk to go off outside. Now we bring the milk in before we go to work but we can't possibly always have done so for the past 50 years. (Parents were in charge for the first 20 years) Please don't worry.
