Gas Smart Meter Problems

Wondering if anyone else has had problems with their smart meter. We had both gas and electric smart meters installed by EDF in October 2020. All worked fine at first then an engineer came to do an 'update' of some sort and we no longer had readings on our Chameleon in home display for gas. On further investigation the actual gas meter was reading
000000.001m3 as a balance and this has not changed since then. We contacted them straight away and were told they would try to fix the problem remotely. In the meantime I kept getting emails asking us to send meter readings, which I kept telling them wasn't changing. They said they couldn't send an engineer due to COVID restrictions. All this time later having sent numerous photos of the meter display I have been told it looks as if it needs to be 'commissioned' which can be done remotely, but not until September! In the meantime our fixed rate has expired (end of June) I wanted to change supplier to get a better deal, but am assuming I can't do this as I won't be able to give a meter reading.
Anyone else had this and mange to get resolved?

Could you check one small detail please...
On top of the electric meter is a small box with lights on it, one of those lights is labelled 'gas', can you take a look at see if the gas light is flashing at all? ... it should be flashing roughly once every 5 seconds.
If it isn't flashing then it will not be possible to fix the problem with a remote attempt to commission the gas meter...
You also say the gas meter was working fine until a engineer visit, but with a reading of only 0.001m3 that particular meter cannot have been working correctly, so is it possible that the engineer fitted a new meter at the time?
Check the meter number on your bills and see if it matches the number shown on the front of the meter...
  • Have checked on the electricity meter and yes, the green light is flashing on the one labelled 'gas'. The engineer who called a few weeks after the meters were fitted wasn't here very long so couldn't have done anthing major.
I looked back on our bills and the gas meter number only changed from the 26/10/20 which is when it was installed. Interestingly, the first bill for this meter was also an estimate which I hadn't noticed before, but we were definitely getting values coming up for both gas and electric on the Chameleon in home display for a few weeks after the meters were fitted. Then the symbol for gas disappeared from this completely. Whatever they did remotely recently (a couple of weeks ago) has meant this symbol has reappeared and shows a value of £1.33 but says 'usage this week 0.00 kwh'. It has shown the electricity usage fine throughout.

  • Sign up with the N3rgy.com website: use the ‘I am a Consumer link’. You will also need your MPAN and the GUID off the bottom of your IHD. If data is being transmitted by your meter via the WAN it should show up on this website. If  there is no data, you will need to speak to your supplier as it is possible that the GSME needs to checked.
  • Thank you for the info. I signed up on the N3rgy.com website as suggested. Electricity is shown with values for each time period I search , gas is reading zero for the same time periods. Waiting to hear back again from EDF!
  • Had this message from EDF today:-
'I've spoken with our Smart team again and they've told me they completed their processes but have been unable to fix the problem. They've said this is a known fault with the Smart meter conversion and we are unable to fix the problem at this time. You can still monitor your usage on your bill or an online account but unfortunately there's nothing more we can do.
Would you be willing to close your complaint or is there anything else I can help you with?'
Have gone back to them to ask exactly how we are to monitor our usage as our bills are all estimated and our meter still reads zero. Also contacted the Ombudsman. Really fed up now,  will move away from EDF as quickly as we can once this is resolved!

I have records of my meter readings and energy consumption going back several years, but you really only need a year's worth. In your situation I would be submitting my own "estimated" readings, using the meter readings/consumption from the same month in the previous year. So starting from the last valid reading of the current meter, and the date associated with it, I would project forward using the same number of units each month as actually used a year ago.
Let's say that the last reading you had which was valid was 12345 on 1 June. Look at June 2020, say you used 40 units. Your estimated reading for 30 June 2021 would be 12385. Look at July 2020. Say you used 30 units. Your estimated reading for 31 July 2021 would be 12415. And so on. Do you get the idea?
Meanwhile pursue a formal complaint and raise it with the ombudsman etc., but at least you'll be in control.
