I recently bought some extra cloud storage from Apple, they really are mean with their initial allowances.

Anyway I thought about clearing out images on both my iPad and iPhone but then read that if I do that they are also wiped from my cloud. Maybe I’m missing out on something here but I thought that one of the reasons for having extra storage is that you can save files, images, music etc without worrying about loosing them.

Have I missed something here?

  • Doesn't look like selective sync is a thing:

Probably for commercial reasons. If you want to store more files, you need to buy another iDevice with more storage.

A dream is not reality, but who's to say which is which?

Off the top of my head and with very broad statements

iCloud photo turned on syncs your data across all devices so if you delete a photo on one device then it will on all other devices.

As I don’t do back ups to my Mac I send copies that are important to me into iCloud Drive which is like a lesser version of Dropbox. No matter if I delete the photo from my phone and all other devices because I saved a copy in iCloud Drive it’s safe.

iCloud will hold the full detailed library, on your devices you need to choose between download full image or optimise storage.

Choose the later and it holds thumbnails/low res versions of the pictures on your devices and pulls down the full version if you double click into it. Depending on how much spare storage space you have will dictate how quickly it removes the full picture and if it has your whole library of thumbnails or just part of it etc. Its a typical Apple product, it does the thinking for you  and most the time gets it right.

If you delete a photo off any device it will remove it from all devices inc the cloud
