    I think you are right to consider what places are like out of season.  I only know Cornwall but it is a very different place in winter and I imagine it is the same in other holiday spots.  I worry that there will be a property slump here in a couple of years when people realise it isn’t for them.

    I've been through this exercise and made a big checklist of what I wanted, what would be nice to have, and what I definitely didn't want.  Proved to be very useful and helped me eliminate certain areas. 

    If you want the sea you can't go wrong with Alnwick in Northumberland.  Ten minutes from Alnmouth beach and open countryside, bus station, hospital, big selection of supermarkets and the second largest bookshop in Europe.  Railway station at Alnmouth.  Also has Alnwick Castle with the opportunity of seasonal work when you retire.
