One way you didn't mention in the article is to buy or lease an electric car! If you do commuting-level mileage then it will probably be at least equivalent Total Cost of Travel but could be cheaper overall. EVs are much more efficient. My energy supplier is Good Energy, and under their Zap Flash tariff for customers with a smart meter, they offer a 4 hour slot once a week when electricity is free. They give notice at least 24 hours in advance. So this makes EV economics even better!
