Gas leak but not a gas leak

I smelt gas around the outside cabinet where the gas meter resides.
I reported it to Cadent, who are the contractors to my utilities company.
They said that there was a leak on the consumer side of the meter.
They then capped of the gas supply and left a warning note to say that the gas must not be used until the leak had been rectified.
They advised me to contact a Gas Safe engineer, which I did.
He came out today, checked the meter and said he could not find any evidence of a leak and reconnected the gas supply.
He also charged me £120 for the work .
The property is shared ownership, 50/50 with a local housing association.
Question:
Should I try and get Cadent to reimburse me for the £120, as in the view of the Gas Safe engineer there was not a leak.
If I am liable, should the cost be 50/50 with the local housing association?
Feeling a bit miffed as as far as I can see, I have spent £120 unneccessarily.

Could you have smelled someone else's leak nearby? Could the smell have been something else? Remember it was you that started the investigation.

Once the gas had been made safe you should have contacted the HA to get the problem fixed. I very much doubt they will now reimburse you.

They will cap off gas if there is the slightest leak even if the leak is less than is allowed by a landlords CP12 safety check
They also capped off when installing a smart meter in a house that had an old boiler because the fool attending did not know what a pilot light was!
I feel your pain although £120 is over the top for an uncap
Next time contact your local letting agent and ask who they use
If they tell you it will likely only be £60 to £800 -
We had similar years ago, the slight leak was from the main gas valve.
The valve is packed with grease, but as mains gas valves don't get touched the grease seal can fail and let gas out.
Turning the gas valve on and off a few times redistributes the grease and reseal the valve, stopping the leak. By simply doing this the Cadent engineer may have sorted the matter, hence no leak when Gas safe arrived.0
