My boyfriend's gran is needing care and is being assessed. My boyfriend has had a joint account with his gran since his grandad died , the money belongs to both . So when assessed will My boyfriend's money be counted for her care ?

Any money to which she has access will be counted, so Yes all the money in that account will be counted as hers. Is this joint account the only account your boyfriend holds? I can understand his name being added to the gran's account if he is helping manage her finances, but putting his own money in there is a strange thing to do.

I agree that it's odd putting his money in the joint account. He should have an account of his own as well.

I've done this before (twice).TELLIT01 said:Any money to which she has access will be counted, so Yes all the money in that account will be counted as hers. It was husband and wife, but money in joint accounts was considered 50/50.
If it's below £14.5K it won't matter anyway.0 -
This says otherwise (above 14.5K in england).Deleted_User said:The answer depends on whether there are savings. Does your boyfriends gran hold any savongs in this account? If not the local authority will only take into consideration the grandmother's income when completing their financial assessment.

The money I'd his and grans from his grandad dying , may seem odd to some but may be a cultural thing their are chinese. And he has just had the joint account as it seemed easier for the inheritance from his grandad.TELLIT01 said:Any money to which she has access will be counted, so Yes all the money in that account will be counted as hers. This arrangement can surely only lead to complications and obfuscation.

The fact that it's a cultural thing is unlikely to carry any weight when calculations are made, unless a will can be produced with detail of the individual inheritances, and bank statements can be provided to prove who has spend what. That is not going to be a straightforward process even if the basic concept is accepted.
