It doesn't cost anything to receive calls on a Sipgate phone. We get local calls free, so when I ring my daughter abroad wherever she is, it's like ringing a local number i.e. free for us, and free for her.
  • Just found the cheapest broadband with landline and anytime calls from Shell Energy, but when completing teh switching information I got almost to the end  and was informed that will not be able to transfer my home phone number and will be given a new number. This was a surprise. Its a deal breaker for us as we use our landlines for all our phone callls. The thought of trying to change all the phone contact details with banks etc and friends is not worth it for us. So will have to look again at deals.
We currently have Now TV broadband, landline and anytime calls to landlines but internet is dreadful - it keeps dropping and will cut out if there is an incoing telephone call.

If its poor with Now then it will be poor from others unless its an internal fault .
Reads as possible badly connected    or filters on phone faulty . Try changing the filters .

But you dont have an Internet landline as per thread title ??
  • Any recommendations for a "SoftPhone" Android App for making VOIP calls via sipgate etc. ?
Playing with VOIP at present as I may be able to get FTTP in a few months via Wefibre.

If your BB is coming from a landline and a wire from a pole then depending on how long the line has being active could depend on the speed as well as drop outs.
In 2011 I got BB to my flat and after a week the speed dropped to less than 2 Mb when it should have been over 29 Mb BT kept saying they would reset the line until I got fed up and told them to replace the line from the pole to the flat, they didn't want to do that until I said if I hang up I will cancel the DD then they agreed. Once they replaced the line from the pole I've had 50 Mb from an up to 67 Mb connection, 44 Mb using my VPN.
Someone please tell me what money is

People can look some up in Google Play or App Store as applicable.

However it may not be necessary to install one. From a certain version Android onwards (including mine with 6.0), SIP settings can be added in the phone itself. I don't know about iPhones.

Look in the Phone app itself, then Settings (via dropdown from the 3 dot menu at top right on mine), Calling accounts, and SIP accounts down that page below the SIM card(s).

The SIP settings will be as recommended by your provider, including some optional ones quite likely left blank

You can register or not to receive SIP calls. Doing so might use more battery life and data. I wouldn't bother unless you have a lot of VoIP contacts or for instance your SIP account is an extension in an employer's PBX.
  • Thanks redux for the detailed reply, unfortunately although on Android 8 the installed Samsung Phone App v3.0.30.81 has no options for SIP or even wifi calling.
Plenty of Apps on Google Store but reviews are all over the place  for them.
Battery use could be an issue but want to play so I can decide whether to ditch the landline when the time comes.
