If you upgrade this to Quark 7, whether it is a Windows PC or Mac upgrade you can contact Quark to make it cross platform. This only applies to versions of Quark 7. I can speak from experience having upgrading from a previous cover disk. It just took a phone call to Quark support and they made the serial number activate on a mac also.
I've had no success with Quark on upgrading to a Mac or cross-platform version. They say the promotional copy upgrade is definitely only available for Windows. I'm not sure how you managed it Jestera - any tips welcome!
  • I bought the mag last time round but never got round to using it (I know not very money saving) just wondering if the disk is likely to be the same as the one I already have and I'll have another chance to register?

Does anyone have a spare / unused Quark Express 5.01 CD / DVD? I've been looking out for this for a while now and missed the cover CD offer.

pm me - thanks in advance.

    rats, i missed this one.

but if anyone's interested in a less classy DTP package (but still able to produce PDFs, etc, so potentially usable in a professional capacity), I've picked up this month's edition of PC Advisor that has Serif Pageplus 8.0 on the disc (Actually, I got confused in the shop whilst scouting to see if any leftover copies of Computer Shopper were about, and thought this was the right one because it looked like a similar deal).

PP was the original Windows DTP application, if anyone's lacking the historical background to this, and was quite powerful even in it's v1.0, 386-friendly form (which I used at school), and should be able to lord it over even recent editions of e.g. MS Publisher, if not actually still being superior to the better-known Quark.

It has the same registration deal as the Quark offer, so again it's probably a slightly older version that they're about to stop/have just stopped selling, and you need to get the magazine in an register it without much messing around.

Out of interest, does this setup (for Quark or PP) mean it becomes unusable if you have to reformat your computer / move to a different one after the deadline, or do you get a re-usable registration number with it? If it's the former, then it's potentially not too much more than a time-limited shareware offer, if you change PC or something goes wrong.

And of course there's the usual other complement of stuff on the disc, which I won't go on to list in case I start sounding like a paid testimonial for PCA, which in actuality I've never bought before :)
(Good to see CS is still offering excellent cover discs, by the way - would have thought such things were extinct by now... but their mid-90s editions went a long way to supplying my family's first PC with a good complement of diverse applications, including one or two that I still use (e.g. Cool Edit) because they're difficult to replace cheaply)

Guys PagePlus 8 can be downloaded for free still, the link is below. HTH

But I'm a bit annoyed after using it. As usual Serif tend to cripple their applications when they give them away for free. Most ofthe templates have NOT been included. Apparently the original software came with around 500MB worth of templates! Anyway worth a punt.

You don't need to go to third-party download sites to get Serif software. They have their own site where you can download free, complete, unrestricted versions of their programs -- usually a version or two older than what's on sale now, presumably to entice you to buy the latest version. There's a website designer, a Photoshop lookalike, and more.

    It's https://www.freeserifsoftware.com

The big issue with DTP programs used to be whether commercial printers can handle them if you want things professionally printed. Quark and Pagemaker were fine, but Serif and Microsoft Publisher were much less common.

That's mostly solved now as long as your DTP prog can expert files as PDFs, which all printers in my experience will accept. So you need to make sure Serif's free version can export as PDFs, but I think it can.

BTW, Pagemaker was the original DTP prog for Windows, ported across from the MAC even before Serif made PagePlus. PagePlus is a very good prog, though, unless you're looking for high end and fairly esoteric features that few of us use. .

I got the fully featured PagePlus X2, and it is surprisingly easy to use
