What does a receipt need to state?

Hello everyone.

I paid an engineer for some services, however, when I asked him for the receive he just provided me with a blank paper with my address, the job he did and the amount of money he charge me as well as his name (no name of the company) and a number that he did not even state it was his engineer number. Is this legal?

Well it certainly is not illegal.  All a receipt is is proof a person received money.
  • Wouldn't he need to at least write the name of his company to provide that the job has been done by a professional and qualified company, person?

Not on a receipt.  Did you not get a contract prior to the work or an invoice?

A receipt is not legally required, the only legal requirement is if a vat registered business requests a vat invoice from another vat registered company it must be provided

It wasn't a blank piece of paper though was it,  it was a receipt.

How do you know he has a company and not just a sole trader? Didn't you do your homework before using his services in the first place?

What exactly are you expecting this piece of paper to state?

Writing the name of a company on a receipt is no guarantee of the quality of the workmanship. If you are concerned about the standard of the service provided then it might be prudent to pay a properly qualified person to inspect it - particularly if the work relates to gas or electrics.
