    Thanks for replies.

Ive tried calling them but cant seem to speak to anyone, I just go round in circles.

My ex partner is adamant she didnt put me on her tax credit claim.
Were you living with your ex partner?

If you were then she was obliged to put you on a tax credits claim.

Has she received any overpayment lettter?

If your ex partner was claiming tax credits whilst you were living with them then no matter what they say it would have either been a joint claim or fraud.

We were not officially living together at that time (2015) I still had my own place. Like I said, I asked her and she denies putting me on the claim, even if she did put me on it, I didnt sign anything or agree to anything! Or receive any monies! So how can I owe them?!?!

Your name must have been on the claim at some point during that time, so fraud could be possible here....

Unfortunately, only HMRC can tell you. There would be no advantage to her putting your name on the claim if you weren't a couple. that would be odd.

has your ex received notice of a similar overpayment  as she would if it was a joint claim. It should be half each.

You've said earlier that you've moved and now living on toy own so you were living together.

It sounds like she was claiming fraudulent as a single person and was investigated and deemed to be living as husband and wife, even if you had another place, hence you being liable for half of it.

That's not correct, tax credits don't work like that. if the ex-partner had claimed fraudulently as a single person, and investigated, the OP would only be on the single claim and belong to the ex-partner. Not the OP. The only way the OP could have an overpayment is if he was part of a joint claim or on his own single claim.
  • Wrong! Now Ive had a letter from DWP with an attachment of earnings... I really have no idea what to do. They will take 20% of my net wage, which will leave me unable to support myself.

    Hope you get this sorted.

Speak to DWP asking for hardship. (whilst challenging the whole issue) I only recall the time when I did rightfully owe the money, my well-meaning but disastrous employer somehow got hardship applied so they were not taking the 20%.

    How you’re told

You and your employer will get a document (called an ‘attachment of earnings order’) from the court. This will tell you:

    • how much you owe
    • how much your employer takes from your wages - you can ***apply to get this changed*** if you cannot afford it
    • when and how the payments have to be made
